TITLE: River Tiles 1, Canvas Print

In 2005 Daylesford was the founding centre of what has become the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. Celebrating those roots, Radius Art in Daylesford has announced the inaugural Radius Photo Award. As a finalist in this award I was invited to exhibit my successful work along with other successful contributors - many incredible local photographers in the region.

Beauty In Decay

Ballarat International Foto Biennale

19 August - 17 November 2021

Eclectic Tastes Cafe, Ballarat, Victoria

All life forms take new shape and context before the macro lens. Nature displays its exquisite delicacy and wisdom, down to the finest detail. Like a dance, an intimate play between life and light. Through photography, I seek to celebrate all parts of life: vitality and decay.

Along with observation, comes the inevitable questions of our own impact on these living organisms, how we affect the ebb and flow. I capture the patterns of decaying and burning leaves and shifting sands in order to worship what is already present and occuring - and to notice what I don’t usually stop to see.

Recovery

Ballarat International Foto Biennale

19 August - 17 September 2017

Europa Cafe, Ballarat, Victoria

What do you do when a journey doesn’t result in the outcome you were looking for? Sometimes it is about the destination.

IVF is today a process that a huge amount of people embark upon, but few talk about. It is different for everyone, different reasons to try, different emotions along the way and different outcomes at the end. For many who don’t end up with the result they are looking for, the question starts to become, when do we give up, rather than when will it happen.

For six years Alison and Michelle held on to hope as they tried various ways to create a family in the way they imagined. Now the question is, how to recover and redesign the vision of their future. This exhibition represents the very thing they can’t escape, the internal search for a way to move forward, heal and continue to accept the result.

Alison and Michelle hope this work provides a place for those who have been through this experience to get lost in the images and know you are not alone.

Bones: A Body Of Work

Ballarat International Foto Biennale

19 August - 17 September 2017

Ballarat Image Gallery, Ballarat Central, Victoria

Boots and bones, recipes and body parts.

An eerie juxtaposition of family heritage, stories of cannibalism and how young wives in the 1800’s should prepare family meals.

Based on true stories from the artist’s family history.

Alison’s investigations into her ancestry uncovered some surprising tales of adventure and danger, conflict and spirituality. In this exhibition, she consolidates pieces of the puzzle to better understand the complexity of her heritage.

Nature’s Abstract

Backspace Gallery

25 May - 11 June 2017

Ballarat Central, Victoria

Nature’s Abstract is an exhibition that worships light and nature and all its interplay.

When a painter and a photographer’s work can blend and align so well, you know that both artists are on a similar path.

In this case, where both focus on “capturing the most subtle, magical and ethereal aspects of natural subjects” in an attempt to “honour the beauty of our own existence – every detail, nuance, breath”.

All photographic images are available for Sale, as Limited Edition digital prints.

Susan Nethercote’s paintings can be found here

Backspace Gallery Ballarat is owned and operated by the City of Ballarat Arts and Cultural Development team.

Buen Camino

Ballarat International Foto Biennale

22 August to 20 September 2015

The Mallow, Ballarat Central, Victoria

“Buen Camino”, the most common phrase you will hear during your walk of the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

Although the destination holds quite the stunning sense of arrival and achievement, truly the journey is the key.

Along 100 kilometres of this age old pilgrimage journey, myself and Michelle Dunn, another photographer from country Victoria (and my partner in life), documented our trek, and collaborated to form this exhibition.

Upon the return of our journey Michelle and I put together this exhibition for The Ballarat International Foto Biennale, exhibiting at The Mallow, 18 Skipton St, Ballarat.

Helena

Ballarat International Foto Biennale

17 August to 15 September 2013

St Patricks Cathedral Hall, Ballarat Central, Victoria

During 2012, Helena was my contemporary dance teacher. I was taking classes at Dancehouse Melbourne in Carlton and Helena’s classes captivated me.

Helena’s style of choreography demanded new movement from my body. It was challenging and unfamiliar, though intriguing and inspiring as well. I struggled to adapt to the foreign shapes, but loved the feeling of exploring these unusual moments in my body. New possibilities in movement opened up, which re-ignited my love for contemporary.

Knowing Helena’s movement style meant that I could approach the photography shoot fully armed with a sense of her rhythm and sensibilities in choreography. I adopted new ways to shoot, in order to capture what I valued in her physical expressions from being her student.

Experiencing India

In 2009 I travelled through India for three months with my partner. It was a journey of great challenges and delights, all the intensity that India is known for, but you can’t imagine before you arrive and are consumed by all its senses. It felt so chaotic and full, yet my images seem to display the quietness and spaciousness that I longed for. India is inspiring and colourful and vibrant and incredible, forcing you to confront all the parts of life that you may not always want to face. These images became my contribution to a joint exhibition with Michelle Dunn, This exhibition was held at the Traveller’s Bookshop Gallery, Fitzroy, Melbourne.
